How to Write Song Lyrics for Beginners

He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God; Many will see and fear And will trust in the Lord ~ Psalm 40:3

Hey Beautiful People! So, let me guess, you're in the mood to write a song, but every time you sit down to play, your mind goes blank, and you can't think up any lyrics. You finally give up, and never write that song that was just waiting to be written. Don't get me wrong, I was there too, I would spend hours just waiting for the perfect line to just pop into my head, but it never did. But now I'm here to give you some tips on how to write song lyrics. So sit back, relax, and learn!

   1. Grab a notebook, and jot down your ideas.

Go ahead! Right now, grab some paper and a pen. I'll wait for you. Ok! Now that you got that, think about what you want your song to feel like. What's the vibe? Happy? Sad? Hopeful? If you don't know what to choose, just start somewhere. What are your emotions like right now? Reflect that onto the song! Basically, brain dump all your emotions and Ideas of what your lyrics could be like. Write down words you want to use, things you want to talk about, and just your ideas in general.

 2. JUST DO IT.

So, you could either sit there for eternity, stressing about how perfect it has to be, (aka wasting time), or, you could just sit down, and write. Play a few chords on your piano, guitar, or ukulele, even if you have no idea how to play. I have no idea how to play either, so if I can do it, you can most certainly do it! Anyway, Play something and mumble along, seriously. If you have one word in mind, sing it when it feels right, and for the rest of it, just mumble until something comes out.

  3. Don't Judge your Work

Now, this point is very important. For a long long time, I would start to write, stop, and then beat myself up because it sounded dumb and cliche. WRONG. Don't judge it until it's finished, and even then, instead of criticizing it, congratulate yourself for starting and finishing a song.

And that's it! Just write whatever comes to mind, and write from the heart. Most importantly, have fun!

Sing to Him a new song;  Play skillfully with a shout of joy. ~ Psalm 33:3
